6. Description of suitability as Commissioner:
I believe my experience and knowledge on issues facing American
Indian people today in Tennessee as well as in the Nation makes me a very
suitable candidate for the Commission of Indian Affairs. I have been a
valued part of the Indian Community since I arrived in Tennessee in 1993. I
have served on Boards and agencies regarding the needs advocacy of American
Indian people. I have served on National boards such as Native American
International Caucus, Native American Ministry Committee, and the United
Methodist Native American center at the school of Theology at Clermont,
California. I have served for four years and been an active member of the
Advisory Council to the Tennessee Commission on Indian Affairs. I am chair
of the Recognition Committee and the History Committee. I led the
Recognition Committee on issues regarding state recognition criteria. I led
the Recognition Committee on the criteria for recognition of the Historical
Tribes of Tennessee, along with the writing of that Resolution. I was on the
writing team that wrote the resolution to end 'mascots' in public schools in
Tennessee. Not only have I been one of the writers, but also I have taken a
delegation of Indian people to Martin Methodist College to address their
mascot the 'Indians' and to start their process in discontinuing that name
and change their mascot to the 'Red Hawks'. I was a speaker at the hearing
regarding Sunset of the old Commission on Indian Affairs and continue to
support the beginning of the new Commission on Indian Affairs. I have stood
strong for preservation of Sacred Sites. I have been a leader and
coordinated the beginning of the Sacred Site run with Ben Yahola, at Pinson
Mound in Jackson TN in March of 2006. I set up speaking program to give
awareness to Sacred Sites at Belmont College in Nashville. I have been on
the Native American Ministry Committee that provided a health Fair at MTSU
Powwow each year. I have helped coordinate American Indians in the Walk on
the Wild Side for Diabetes at the Nashville Zoo. I continue to advocate for
good health in our Indian Community by seeking ways to relate these
practices.
I am a citizen of a federally recognized tribe, The Great Muscogee
'Creek' Nation of Oklahoma. I am the great, great granddaughter of Chief
Samuel Checote who was the first elected Chief of the Muscogee people in
Oklahoma Indian Territory. My Tribal town from my grandfather is Big Spring
and from my grandmothers in Tuskegee, my Clan is Bear, my Indian Church is
New Town 'Tvlofv Mucvse'.

6. Description of suitability as Commissioner:
What does it mean to be suitable as a Commissioner?
Am I concerned with the welfare of the American Indian (AI) communities of
Tennessee? Yes, unequivocally!
Do I make it a point to keep up with the message boards to know what is
happening? Yes!
Do I contact congressional representatives to relate to them the import of
their decisions upon the AI population? Yes!
Do I make a point to relate to local leaders the importance of their AI
constituents? Yes!
Do I seek to show to local and state governments that AI contributes to the
general welfare? Yes!
Do I attempt to communicate with AI leaders across the state to determine
the means whereby the AI population can be edified? Yes!
Am I involved in my Tribal group? Yes, the Chikamaka Cherokee Band of the
South Cumberland Plateau Region
Do I understand the ramifications of having actual AI communities in
Tennessee? Yes!
Do I have an understanding of the Protocol to be used in Commission
Meetings? Yes, Robert's Rules of Order.
Do I attempt to understand the underlying laws regarding AI? Yes, I have
studied and study the rulemaking process in TN. TN laws regarding entities,
as well as the 25 CFR.

Last but not least in this Litany ...
Do I actually attend the State Commission meetings to know what is being
reviewed that could/will affect the AI of Tennessee? Yes, with few
exceptions for the last 3+ years. I have made it a point to drive all over
the state to attend meetings of the TNCIA. I'm not sure all of the current
commissioners can say the same. We need people in the offices of
Commissioner who actually are involved in when and where the Commission
meets.
I have been in some facet of business consulting for the past 18 years. Much
of this has been Management and IT operations. Companies hire me because I
have been good at working the puzzle ... I seek solutions and don't just look
at the problem. The situations in business, in government and in our
communities arise because of the need of the persons involved. It may be
that a company's process flow is suffering, and this is where I have been
inserted into the program to determine means whereby the companies may work
more efficiently. This is and has been the talent I use and would endeavor
to use within the office of Commissioner. Have I made mistakes? Yes because
I am actually attempting to do something. If a person never makes mistakes,
he/she is obviously doing nothing.
I am not a perfect person, but I am striving to render aid, understanding,
social development and economic development to the American Indian
Communities of Tennessee. Is this an easy task? No, but it is a task that
must be undertaken to ensure self-realization to our progeny. I want to be a
part of representing those who wish to procure for those who are yet to be
'life, liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.'
