6. Description of suitability as Commissioner:
I am a 50 year old educated woman who maintains a balance home, family, and
community. I have been active in some form in the sate Indian community
since 2000, and have tried to stay abreast of state wide and national
American Indian issues since the late 90's. I have participated in the
process that drives the commission since 2000, and have participated in the
elections as a constituent since 2001, a delegate since 2003, and a
candidate since 2005. I have had experience in collegiate level government
as an officer (secretary) for two terms, and have served as the chairman of
a 501-c-3 for over 10 years. I have participated actively in both small,
grassroots organization and in large national organization.
I understand that not everyone can be pleased and that conflict happens, but
I also understand that conflict is often the first step to dialogue, and
that dialogue is the most important step in resolution. While the Commission
functions as an entity of the state of Tennessee and under its guidelines, I
also understand there are significant cultural traditions and conflicts that
must be dealt with and accommodated as much as possible for the Commission
to truly be representative of the Tennessee American Indian Community.
I believe the most important aspects of myself I can bring to the Commission
are Patience, tolerance, open-mindedness, the willingness to seek the advice
and guidance of others, especially my elders and mentors, and the knowledge
of who I am - a Delaware woman.
